Omni Grove Park Inn Hosts 29th National Gingerbread House Competition

The 29th Annual National Gingerbread House Competition will be held at the Omni Grove Park Inn on November 22.

The bar is high for attendees, as the caliber continues to rise each year with large gingerbread sculptures displaying the intricate designs and craftsmanship of the artists.

“It blows my mind every year,” said Susan Rotante, Director of Marketing and Communications. “Last year’s grand prize winner – during a pandemic – had 5,000 individual coins. There were 3,000 individually baked ginger clay bricks on this piece by Merry Mischief Bakers ‘Christmas Shop (decor).’ It was cinematic and completely 360 and it told you a story from all angles.

Winners will be announced at a closed-door awards ceremony. This year’s judges include chefs Nicholas Lodge and Carla Hall, who will select the top three finalists in four categories – adults, teens, youth and children – who will receive cash and prizes.

Last year, the event was virtual, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, competitors will once again be welcomed to the Omni Grove Park Inn for what Rotante calls a “family reunion”. In addition, the event serves as a showcase for the creativity and growth of gingerbread.

“We’ve seen competitors rise through the ranks from child to teenage years – we’ve seen them grow into adults, very skilled competitors and evolve their skills,” Rotante said. “I am so excited to once again welcome the competitors with open arms and celebrate their hard work and continue the legacy of gingerbread. This is really what it is. It’s more than the hotel, it’s about these competitors.
