NYC Hospitality | Hotel resort fees

More and more hotels are charging carefully hidden resort fees as they face increasing competition from Airbnb and falling room rates.

The number of hotels charging such fees rose 26% last year while average fees rose 12%, according to Long common in seaside resorts and casino hotels, living expenses now extend to large cities. For example, the Crowne Plaza Times Square charges a fee of $ 30 per night, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Attorneys general in 46 states are looking into the practice because living expenses are often not announced, leaving consumers in the dark about their room prices.

“We want accommodation companies to just present their full and accurate prices up front, so the consumer can see what a room will cost them,” DC Attorney General Karl Racine told the Journal.

The fees and surcharges will total around $ 2.7 billion this year, according to Bjorn Hanson, a professor at NYU’s hospitality program. This is a 35 percent increase from five years ago.

New York City hotels have been hit particularly hard by competition from short-term rental site Airbnb as well as an increase in the supply of new hotels. Manhattan hotel revenues fell for the fourth consecutive winter to $ 164 per room. [WSJ]Konrad putzier
